Why Does Colour Change?

Every screen is different.

A design viewed on a mobile phone may appear brighter and more saturated than the same file viewed on a laptop or desktop monitor.

Even two identical monitors can display colours differently depending on their settings.

Several factors influence how digital artwork appears, including:

• Screen brightness and contrast
• Display technology (OLED, LCD, LED, Retina, etc.)
• Colour calibration
• Ambient lighting in the room
• Device colour profiles
• File format and embedded colour space

This means the artwork you create or approve may already look different depending on which device you’re using.

Printing Uses Ink – Not Light

One of the biggest differences is how colours are created.

Digital screens produce colour using **light (RGB – Red, Green and Blue)**, while professional printers reproduce colour using **inks (CMYK – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black)**.

Because these colour systems work differently, some vibrant colours that appear on a screen simply cannot be reproduced exactly in print.

Fluorescent blues, vivid greens and intense reds are common examples.

Paper choice also plays an important role. A glossy photo paper will often appear more vibrant than an uncoated or fine art paper, even when printed from the same file.

Why Doesn’t My Print Match My Screen Exactly?
